Sen McCain: Rep Joe Wilson's Was "Totally Disrespectful"

During President Obama's major health care speech on Wednesday, South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson (R) yelled out "You lie!" when the President said the legislation would not mandate coverage for undocumented immigrants. - huffington

I actually saw Palin as the GOP's lame attempt to pick a woman and siphon away the female voters who were disappointed after Hillary lost. The problem was, they didn't actually know much about Palin when they picked her.

I think that at that point, the religious right simply looked up and said "Holy shit, we're mainstream now!!!" and started taking over.

Hm - well no surprises here. McCain is a RINO who is perpetually desperate for sloppy wet kisses from the media. He has a storied history of bad-mouthing his own party so that he can get free props from liberal media, other RINOs, and make himself appear 'independant'. 2008 must have been a difficult time for him, because he actually had to pretend to be a member of his own party for a change. It must have been particularly galling for him to do that...

Every party has its loose cannons (like Joe Lieberman & Zell Miller). But most of the time when a politician diverges from his 'party line' they have only two choices... (A) Quit the party. (B) Sell out. It's only a RARE few who can thumb thier nose at the party and stay part of it.

Completely agree. He didn't sound any better here than he has in the past. This Joe Wilson guy is an easy target right now because he made himself one. I'm almost more curious to see who doesn't come out in front of a camera and try to bash the guy for his impulsiveness. They're the ones really making a statement.

Winstonfield and Thumper, how do you imagine the GOP could come back into power if they regularly insult all moderate conservatives?

It takes a majority of the populace getting behind you to win an election (democracy). Folks on the far left who believe in political self-flattery think Nader or Kucinich would capture the votes of centrists... Folks on the far right are just as unreasonable.

The term 'rino' seems to be one of the stupidest things ever thought up in politics, whether from the left or the right.

I don't particulary care what happens to the Republican party. I hope the current Republican party dies in a fire. They abandoned the principles of limited government, low taxes, and hewing to the original constitution. McCain doesn't stand for those principles any more. I'm not sure he ever did. He's a big government, tax & spend goombah who should never have been nominated to run for President.

Until the Republicans nominate a strong fiscal conservative who really believes in the constitution then I couldn't care less about who they do or don't offend.

Reagan did in the 80s, but he was unfortunately saddled with a liberal congress and more than a few RINOs. Also in 1993 there was a brief spurt of rhetorical conservatism as they took the house, but it quickly died. Other than those two faint glimmers, the Republican party really hasn't done anything except pay lip service to those principles. Unfortunate, really. The democrats are worse though. They actively seek to subvert those principles.

I was in grade school then, but I remember Reagan pushing some pretty expensive stuff, and committing some fringe actions that I would now say push the constitutional envelope. It wasn't just congress.

National defense. That's the only thing that federal government actually SHOULD be doing, so I don't have a problem with them so much. I'd prefer less political meddling in international matters though. Small government, strict constitution, fiscal responsibility. Nowadays the obstacle to these issues is domestic entitlement spending, social engineering, and so forth. Reagan could have done better, but with a democrat congress it is hard. He talked the right stuff though. Even the Repubican party didn't like how hard he was pushing for cuts in domestic spending.

Winstonfield, if you use RINO to disparage reasonable moderates like McCain and Schwarzenegger and to promote crazies like Palin, then you're bad for conservatives.

If you want the GOP to lose every presidential election for the next 30 years because they keep nominating crazies, your going to end up with a society that's much more liberal in all the ways you hate.

Liberals might help you out in future elections by voting for Nader, thus giving crazies victories the way they did in 2000, but you can't rely on that.
