Salvia divinorum: Extremely psychoactive drug

I never even heard of this drug until I came across this video quite by accident. Interesting.
choggiesays...

whats funny to this child of hippies, is that Salvia was unknown to folks experimenting with drugs in the 70's, 80's, (wayyyy better stuff to trip on when the good clean LSD25 was pouring out of Sandoz, Berkeley)....primary use in Chinese medicine???...treatment for hepatitis and angina......go get it ya dingbats, and try to see god!!!

rottenseedsays...

It's pretty brutal. A lot of headshops here sell it in terms of strenght: 1x, 2x, 5x, 10x, etc. all the way up to 40x or so.

Let's just say 10x will make you not wanna do it again...I don't wanna imagine anything else.

videosiftbannedmesays...

Having used Salvia 10x several times successfully over the last several months, let me be the first to say: Respect it. These YouTube videos of kids doing bong loads of the stuff is pure looney tunes. Of course you're going to have a bad trip if you do that much all at once. Even I haven't progressed passed taking 1-2 hits in one sitting.

With all that said, it is truly a pleasant experience depending on how you use it. I have had soft music playing in a dimly lit room and have had some very transcendental experiences. I had one very pleasant trip where I felt like I had regressed back to when I was 2-3 years old, when you are making your first memories.

Other times, I've tried it a few times while playing Quake 3 and BF1942 and all I can say is, you are IN the game. Very wild. Also, tried it once while watching the TV show "The Office" and the mockumentary style lent itself perfectly to it. Made me feel like I was actually at Dunder-Mifflin Scranton branch listening to them scheme on how they were going to screw with Dwight.

But again, RESPECT the Salvia. Cause it will kick your ass.

grintersays...

It can be very difficult to get the 'full' experience.
Low doses make it feel like you are stuck on the tilt-o-whirl.
I haven't encountered much of value with the plant yet, but I'm moved to keep trying every once and a while.
It seems to consistently mess with one's perception of 3-dimensional space, unlike anything else that I know of. So many times I've heard something like, "wow reality just split into tiny strips, moved this direction, and then slipped off a cliff into nothingness."

pragmaticksays...

Tried it several times. Didn't work at all. Tastes disgusting. Wouldn't recommend it.
Shrooms, on the other hand... WOW!
I probably just gone bad one. Dunno. Not too eager to try it again, I absolutely do fine without drugs.

bodybuzzsays...

I loved the intensity of the Salvia high (I usually take 1/2 gram in a 3 chamber water-bong) All the visions and without the time commitment of Shrooms or LSD.

Try taking it as the passenger in a car driving through a brightly lit city at night... WOW what a rush!!!

rougysays...

"Have to say that this stuff didn't seem that intense at all. I've had experience with a lot of different hallucinogens and this certainly didn't even effect me as much as weed."

Then you didn't do it right, hombre. This stuff makes weed look like a small glass of lite beer.

Baquetasays...

Tried it once, coughed so much I nearly puked after taking a pretty big hit. It's really, really foul stuff! Quite an interesting trip, but it only lasted a few minutes for me, presumably because I coughed up most of it...

Maybe I should give it another chance while it's still legal where I live...

berticussays...

Tried it once when I was younger with some friends, it sent a tingle up my spine and that was about all, unfortunately. One friend forgot who he was and where he was for about 30 seconds.

Nice positive video. I'm surprised at all the comments! Someone should start a drug sift talk (if there isn't already one) where we can talk about our experiences

Trancecoachsays...

sacred substances need to be taken in sacred space, with proper reverence and intention -- usually including guidance from those who have "been there" before. Where's the corollary ayahuasca video?

Welcome to the archaic revival. We'll be returning to the ancestral passages before too soon.

rougysays...

I totally agree with whoever it was up there that said you should respect it. They compare it to having a goddess visit you.

If you try it, just do 5x for starts, keep the flame on the herb, and make sure you hold your smoke for at least 20 seconds.

You'll go "there" very quickly.

Tymbrwulfsays...

Trying this stuff for the first time, I "saw" myself live an entire lifetime to the ripe old age of 80 in the span of a couple minutes. Then I saw someone else trying it and saw how helpless they become while tripping, decided never to do it again.

cybrbeastsays...

Wow, an informative little clip on Salvia.
I have a quite lot of experience with Salvia, done it upwards of thirty times. Sagewisdom is one of the best sites to learn more about this drug, with many tips also for people who don't want to smoke it and try the oral route instead.
Salvia has a scale of effects, from light stoney feeling all the way up to complete egoloss or retrograde amnesia in the highest dose. For many people it takes a few tries to really break through. And for many users it is not a particularly pleasant trip, mostly neutral and very weird. Some people can have really bad experiences and that's why a sitter should be present for first time use. The good thing is it will only last a few minutes, though it can seem like forever if you are under the effects of Salvia.
On Erowid (one of the most informative sites on ALL drugs) you can read many experience reports on Salvia.

The Salvia experience for me is like entering a fractal space. First it will feel like an artificial gravity that is pulling me in some direction, then my mind separates from my body and inflates. At this stage I've usually lost the concept of me and reality. I enter a multidimensional space that encompasses countless sentients. When I go there it feels like I'm part of huge zipper that's unzipping where every teeth is a sentient. After so many teeth it will come along a bigger tooth like a bigger element of a fractal where the smaller repetitions form along. This goes on ad infinitum like a fractal.
On a really high dose I separated from the 'normal' Salvia space. I felt these entities observing me and I could 'see' them. They felt like my parents, but it was like they were my parents but not parents I've ever known. Like gods or something. It also felt that if I stayed in this place I would stay there and have to leave my other life behind me. Like an afterlife. This did freak me out a lot and I got scared, then the trip quickly winded down.
On coming back I often have this feeling of being miles wide and slowly integrating back into my body.
This is the best I can explain it, but it's hard for me to even comprehend it. The experience is kind of like a dream where once you are back you have a hard time to remember how it all went. I think you just can't understand what went on in a sober state. Only when using Salvia again I have this feeling like aha, that's how it was.
Haven't used Salvia in a long time. But I might give it a go again in the future. I'm still very curious. When I do it again I'll probably start with light doses again and see where they take me.

I'm still an atheist btw

But..... why would ya want such a ragged trip, when mushrooms grow in cowfields?? Bucha self-shamanics.....I got a good one for ya, chew up 100 morning glory seeds, snort some nutmeg, chew on some salvia leaves while smoking banana peels, and tell all yer friends, how expansive an experience you had, and leave out the heart palpitations, diarrhea, and itching and burning sensations parts.....yer sure to start another college trend......!!

AeroMechanicalsays...

Some people will take anything psychoactive, regardless of whether it's psychoactive in a positive or negative way. I suppose some people like it- affects everyone differently, never understood that myself. If you're going to do drugs (and really, you shouldn't) there are much better drugs to do.

In my experience, it just makes everything seem 'slanted.' Given the choice between slanted and pulsating, undulating waves of joy through a universe that seems to sway like kelp on a warm, underwater current, I'd take the latter.

Better yet though, learn to like the universe the way it is. It's pretty amazing right out of the box. Sure, it's legal, but since when did drug-users give a damn about legalities?

cybrbeastsays...

I see psychedelics on a higher level than just recreational drugs. Psychedelics can really make you experience yourself and reality in a completely different view. They give such a fascinating insight on the processes that actually go on in your brain. And it's amazing that a small relatively harmless chemical can alter your state so profoundly. I see no reason why people who want to experience this should be labeled criminals.
Salvia also has the added affect on many users that they experience a few days of seeing the world in a slightly different light and report a very positive feeling. Low non hallucinogenic doses of Salvia seem to be very effective anti-depressants in a number of case studies.
Psychedelics like mushrooms and LSD have also shown great promise in psychedelic psychiatric treatment.

Mgshadowsays...

The news here in central Cali think this a big deal. Are there any cases of people dying on this stuff? Or maybe having a trip that really screwed them up? Im curious.

Don't do drugs, M'kay
Drugs are bad, M'kay

cybrbeastsays...

No one has ever died of an overdose of Salvia and it is probably impossible. Even with pure extracted Salvinorin A, the active chemical (active at doses of 400 micrograms), grams have been given to lab animals without deaths occurring.
Bad trips do happen, but it only lasts a few minutes. During those minutes though, people can be unaware of their movements and might be a danger to themselves if they get up. That's why a sitter is recommended for novices.

My turn to Chime:

Yes the plant is potent (if smoked correctly).
No, it is not a pleasant "smoke", but after a year of smoking catnip cigarettes to kick the nicotine/oral fixation addication that goes with tobacco smoking, it's like a chocolate cake (meow).

some of the interesting things about it:
never feel the "need" to get back on THAT bus anytime
and the strange "regressing back to childhood" experiences most everybody seems to feel.

Um, not really sure if that deserves a "wow" or not.

I've tried a wide variety of drugs, though I've always avoided the chemically addictive stuff. You'd be surprised how many different drugs are outside the category. I've never even heard of this stuff. Though I might try it sometime, I'd have to say when it comes to psycho-actives I prefer mushrooms. Fantastic sensory experience that lasts hours and has virtually no side effect (unless yo count the taste lol.)

As to the 'I've never done drugs.' and 'I'd rather have a shot or two.' and 'ditch the need!' Listen folks, if you drink, you do a drug. If you smoke, you do a drug. The word 'drugs' has such a negative connotation in this country it's pathetic. Just about everyone does one drug or another. So don't knock the guy who smokes a bit of weed on the weekends or the folks that enjoy this stuff once in a while. People are driving around in this country killing each other cause they are wasted alchoholics. Yet the word 'pot' is hush hush and your in deep shit in some states if you ever get caught even with a utensil that might have some residue on it. It's frankly pathetic.

And coming from Tim Hortons land (Canada), if you drink coffee, you do a drug. People who drink it are often addicted.

And smell like shit.

Mgshadow: It has never been proven that anyone has died *directly* by taking Salvia. However, it has been made illegal in Delaware due to "Brett's Law" after a 17-year old committed suicide. While such a thing is terrible, his parents latched onto the fact that he had recently smoked Salvia before his suicide and petitioned to make it illegal, rather than focus on the fact their son had a history of depression and was taking several other medications to treat his condition.
