Romney silent on climate change

DailyKos description:

A fascinating video clip from earlier today at a Romney campaign stop where an audience member unfurls a banner and shouts: "What about climate change? That’s what caused this monster storm."

What occurred then is like something out of a Twilight Zone episode.

Now imagine you are a campaign adviser- you just had an active (almost-)hurricane rip through the most "media-covered" city in the USA and its mayor consecutively openly addressing what should have been a core election-topic.

You advise your client to ignore the question.

I don't know what frightens me more - the fact that what is supposedly America's brightest Republican spinsters can't come up with a better solution to this... let's say somewhat foreseeable problem - or the fact that Obama campaign have gladly ignored this rather glaring chink in their opponents armor and hence probably doesn't have a truly debatable stance either...

Jesus fucking Christ with magic underwear, What... the... fuck was that?? Someone finally asks a politician a hard, burningly relevant question, and gets chanted down with mindlessly irrelevant U-S-A! screams that doesnt mean anything. Akward silence, and then Romney fires off the same fucking generic soundbite non-statement about a new course, I mean, WHAT THE FUCK?

It's worse than i thought.

This video is awesome! If EVER there was a video to demonstrate the total ignorance and unwillingness to be educated, the utter simplicity of mind, and the complete idiocy of the staunch republican voter, this is it.

Hilarious!

2. Climate Change. The Earth’s climate is changing and there is concern about the potentially adverse effects of these changes on life on the planet. What is your position on cap-and-trade, carbon taxes, and other policies proposed to address global climate change—and what steps can we take to improve our ability to tackle challenges like climate change that cross national boundaries?

Great article.

Romney: "However, there remains a lack of scientific consensus on the issue — on the extent of the warming, the extent of the human contribution, and the severity of the risk"

Nope, wrong, same old climate-denial bullshit. He tempered it for the target SciAm audience, but it's the same old "Well... we just don't know for sure" nonsense.

The serious scientific community has absolute consensus on climate change. They know it's happening, they know it's man-made, and they know we have to move immediately to mute the damage. The only "debate" is between actual scientists and industry hacks.>> ^deedub81:

I don't really know with a 100% certainty that humans are 100% responsible for climate change but I do believe that we do create and are creating an impact. I don't know the science behind it but when I see that scientists tend to believe it is real and is happening I have to give that credibility because who would know better than they? What I think is even more important than climate change however is it's big brother sustainability. I bet the people in the audience would chant U.S.A. to that question as well. Mainly because people are afraid of the answer to that question and they would rather pretend it doesn't exist. I believe they think the present is more important than the future. But, when helium and tungsten prices start shooting through the roof and people are no longer able to afford to blow up a balloon for their kids birthday and light bulbs start steadily rising in costs these problems will no longer be avoidable. I think that is what scares me most about this video is we could be doing something about it now.>> ^bobknight33:

I see this statement a lot, but grossly over-simplifying doesn't help the fight against the deniers.

1. Climate change is categorically not "man-made". It has always happened, will always happen. There's no such thing as a static climate.

2. We are evidently contributing to it, and even relatively small changes in a chaotic system can have massive implications.

3. This particular chaotic system is comprised of vast, intricate and poorly-understood feedback loops. There may or may not be anything we can do about climate change. Stopping with the planet-rape is a good idea in any case.

KnivesOutsays...

Certainly the climate has changed before man became involved. That's not the point. The point is that the specific changes that we should be concerned about are the changes that we are responsible for. These are the changes in climate that we can have an effect on, because these are the changes in climate that we effected.

Splitting hairs on syntax only empowers the deniers.>> ^Mammaltron:

Coincidentally they were talking about the candidates' climate change positions on NPR yesterday. Obama himself is very quiet about it this election, too. And Romney said he agreed with scientific consensus (and even took methods to restrict carbon emissions) when he was guv in MA... funny how running for president suddenly changes everything.

Republicans remind me of Wile E Cyote sometimes...point out that the branch they are furiously trying to saw through is one they are sitting on,and to continue would mean disaster, and they will just glare at you and start cutting it FASTER.

Jinxsays...

Well. Something we can agree on. I don't believe status quo is the right course either. Of course, he probably wants to go back to a previous status quo and I want to go find new ones, but ok.

Also, I don't think I have much to say about climage change either. I dont think I even know what it is.

Someday our children will learn that climate change is the greatest hoax of the 21st century and allowed other more real and serious environmental problems go ignored till it was too late.

Not fucking likely. Someday children will look back with the same revulsion we feel she we discuss slavers and wonder how we could possibly have let it get so bad and then, when presented with overwhelming evidence, how deranged morons like you could respond with "fuck it, let's just accelerate into this clusterfuck"

But hey, I don't have kids, and frankly I've given up trying to make a difference and educate you and you ilk, so fuck it, bring on the climate disaster. It'll kill a whole heap of people and the planet will be a really unpleasant place for a few centuries, but maybe it's a lesson we need to learn.

Why does no other country seem to chant it's name/acryonym when someone does something out of the ordinary. Really ? have you ever seen a clip of Greece or Russia or canada or Britain chanting their name like its a fucking hockey game ? what is up with that ? really ? what is up with chanting U.S.A ?

To be honest, I don't care if a coalition between the Marx Brothers, Oscar The Grouch, and the entire hamlet of Troskač. A significant alteration in the biosphere is still all it would take to reduce modern civilization to a state of absolute ruin.

Rarely do I see emergency workers begin to investigate the cause of a fire as the building burns down around them.
