Rock Climber describes hacking off his own arm

A boulder falls on rock climber Aron Ralston's hand. Over the course of five days, he realizes he must hack off the hand and the end of his arm. Some of the descriptions are amazing; particularly the one about him pushing his knife through the skin of his hand, releasing decomposition gases.

Not for the squeamish, but definitely an amazing and disturbing walk through...

Oh, BTW, he now has a climbing ax for an arm.

Eww, that's disgusting. Even more disturbing is why he would continue his hobby. If we ever have another story on him in climbing accident, it most certainly deserves an EIA tag. And wait, this is Engineering how??

I remember hearing about this guy several years ago in the news, and even then I though "christ that guy has amazing strength", but knowing what he went through in that step by step description... Wow.

This is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard.

He used torque? haha

If someone wants to remove it, that's fine. I tend to liberally apply labels.

I have no idea why -- I can watch the goriest movies imaginable without batting an eye, but if I witness someone getting even a papercut, I start getting weak-kneed.

I couldn't watch more than a couple of minutes of this without getting queasy, despite the fact that they didn't even show anything. This is why I always scoff when people say that watching violent movies or playing violent videogames desensitizes you to violence. I think the brain can definitely tell the difference between what's real and what's fantasy, no matter how much crap you watch/play (and trust me, I watch/play a lot of crap).
