Rio Las Vacas Guatemala Cleanup

The Rio Las Vacas in Guatemala is one of the most polluted rivers on earth. This small river is estimated to contribute 2% of the total plastic pollution we dump in the oceans yearly.
The Ocean Cleanup recently installed trash barriers on the river, which created literal mountains of plastic trash requiring over 1000 truckloads to remove, with more coming constantly. Projects like this are unsustainable and are too few to make a real difference yet.
It’s estimated that over 80% of ocean pollution comes from less than 1% of rivers, but the task of removing it before it gets in the ocean is still insurmountable, even under the best conditions possible.
