Unfortunately, given the fact that he did this in the first place, it's unlikely he'll learn anything from this experience. He's probably out there somewhere right now saying "You'd better aim better this time". It's not even necessarily the fault of the shooters aim. Aye, I fear he'll not learn anything as well, but I sure hope he will. And aye, paintball guns aren't the most accurate things ever, the spread at that distance can easily be from the actual aimed line to the eye. Ah well, not the first kid I know of who has lost an eye in play.
