Interesting. Reminds me of the Humanzee in the Michael Chrichton's Next.

Jump ahead to part 6, if you want to know whether he's a true Humanzee.
jwraysays...He could be a chimaera: part chimp and part human-chimp hybrid. That would perfectly explain the original DNA test results. A proper human-chimp hybrid would have 47 chromosomes in every cell, but only a few of Oliver's cells were that way and the rest were chimp cells. Over time his immune system might preferentially destroy the hybrid cells. Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder.

Just to be clear- from everything I've read- human-chimp sex does not produce progeny. But evidently the soviets gave it a good try- they were interested in making a super stong chimp-man army.

Any vid requiring that comment, has to be watched.
snoozedoctorsays..."Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder."
Remember, there are multiple forms of arthritis. The most common is osteoarthritis which is basically wear and tear. It's mostly traumatic arthritis. The autoimmune types, like rheumatoid and lupus-associated, are less common.
This was damn fascinating. I'd never heard of this ape. If this was a "mutated" chimp, it would be startling evidence from the wild that a sudden, chance, and dramatic mutation could be beneficial. It could have allowed him advantages over others in the wild. His lack of interest in the chimp ladies would have prevented his passing on his mutation, but it seems maybe his preference for the ladies was influenced by who he was around during sexual maturation. Beggars can't be choosers. Seems like he was doing his best to get some romancing. Who knows, in a dim-lit smoky bar and a few whiskey sours, he might have had some luck.
A "super strong chimp army" could be easily enough defeated with booby-trapped bananas. The Soviets should have known that.
laurasays...*promote this oddity, very interesting.

Memoraresays...i wish they would have asked the 1 legitimate geneticist in the whole show at the end whether it was even remotely theoretically possible to produce a hybrid. i suspect the answer is no, but i are not a geneticist.
joedirtsays...Ok, I did watch the whole thing, and I want my time back.
WTF, so was he human-ish? There was no DNA results other than to say some inconclusive chromosome test. If some cells have this and some have more, WTF? contantimation? Did they keep any DNA from him for modern testing?
ponceleonsays...Yeah, it is a very interesting story, but when all was said and done, recent tests showed he was just a chimp. Nothing more. A strange chimp nevertheless, but just a chimp.
humbug...
At least he's no longer in a cage at a medical facility.
rottenseedsays...we're all just chimps, my friends...we're all just chimps.

ponceleonsays...I've seen a number of documentaries about Oscar. The most recent one I saw did have a more conclusive DNA test which showed pretty clearly that he's just a chimp. An unusual looking/walking chimp, but just a chimp.
Sorry.
rottenseedsays...But it's still interesting...
