NordlichReitersays...Sounds Like Finger Men from V for Vendetta.
bamdrewsays...not a big fan of the idea, but its not worth getting upset about a vague idea.
there were absolutely no specifics given except an age range and a 3-4 month time period tossed out there, so until we know what the goals of the venture are, who the exceptions are (women?), etc. etc., i'm not even the slightest bit concerned.
that said, i have a friend from germany and a friend from syria who did mandatory military positions when they were around 18-20 years old, and they both have fun stories about it. certainly wasn't something they regret.
NordlichReitersays...The US is not Germany or Syria this is the US and we have to strive to keep it ours, for as long as possible.
The right to choose whether you have to do something is what this country was founded on, and its why our founding fathers and soldiers fought for.
Compulsory service, is not OK. I will not be forced to wear a uniform that I do not endorse.
We had this discussion already, the subject was the draft.

They are using Draft Laws to squirm about here.
(Ill godwin it, and add some japanese to it)
We already have a national guard, and militias, what do we need an American version of the Hitler youth, or the Kempetai running around?
MINKsays...omg serving your country fuck that its unpatriotic
13150says...From what I understand, not only is the plan almost entirely voluntary (except where it concerns education), it is also designed to give students a chance to better themselves through a college education. I can tell you with absolute certainty that if I could get a $4,000 per year tax credit toward my Master's Degree just for putting in 100 hours of service, I would do it in a heartbeat.
I'm holding out hope that the 50 hours per year required of middle- and high-schoolers will also count as an education credit, because a $12,000 education credit, coupled with continued service throughout college, would be a tremendous benefit to students who might otherwise never be able to go to college.
That said, I'm a little nervous about the service as well...I want to see what will come of it, but Obama has expressed interest in this being like Americorps or the Peace Corps...that's hardly the Hitler Youth.
BillOreillysays...welcome to Communism
NetRunnersays...How else are we going to take away everyone's guns?
siftbotsays...Moving this video to NordlichReiter's personal queue. It failed to receive enough votes to get sifted up to the front page within 2 days.
bluecliffsays...this plan was outlined in his book. it's sort of a liberal civil service, as far as I can see.
bcglorfsays...One good thing with it would be the end of apathy. People think long and hard about supporting a war when there is a chance they might have to fight it. And if youtube is any indication, American voters wouldn't be hurt any by seeing what the rest of the world is really like either. It'd get a lot more people telling the extreme left/right cranks to shut up and pay attention to the real world.
