New Zealand Same Sex Marriage Bill passes first reading

Yesterday the New Zealand parliament passed the first reading of the Same Sex Marriage bill 80-40.

The bill still has to go to a Select Committee, but the overwhelming support makes it likely to become law. Even the current centre-right government party (National) voted for it (including PM John Key).

NZ already allows same sex civil unions, but this is another step towards recognising that civil rights apply to everyone and "separate but equal" is a concept that belongs in the past.
