Neighbour Catches 7-Year-Old Girl Falling from Window

(youtube) A bystander has filmed the moment a neighbour saved a seven-year-old US girl from injury after she fell from a third-storey window.

Brooklyn resident Steven St Bernard, 52, suffered a torn tendon in his bicep when he caught little Keyla McCree in his arms yesterday, the NY Post reports.

Keyla, who has autism, had squeezed through the gap between a new air-conditioner and the window frame.

Mr St Bernard said she stood on top of the air-conditioner for a moment "dancing and smiling" before falling.

"There were all these kids yelling, 'the little girl, the little girl'," said Mr St Bernard, a city bus driver.

"I saw a little girl standing on the air conditioner. I said, 'Let me get over to her in time. And I made it just in time."

Her mother Shaleema McCree said Keyla was fine.

"Not a scratch on her. The man caught her, thank God. It's a miracle."

As father of a toddler, this literally brings tears on multiple levels. The idea of my child falling like that breaks my heart, but the idea of some total stranger coming to his rescue like that makes my heart swell.

Oh my fuck...you ungrateful cunt. A miracle? No, it was this man's sacrifice that allowed your autistic child to live. Oh and thanks for watching after your little shit-stain...she could've killed herself.

Yeah, the theological angle is the one to concentrate on, how fucking predictably boring. Back on topic, the mother needs a slap.

It's worth mentioning, it really is. It's a big fucking problem that people have a disconnect that goes
"Holy crap, my daughter almost died, that man was amazingly good and quick and threw himself into harm's way to save my child"

"Thank God for that"

No, thank the man, thank him, thank his upbringing that he wouldn't stand by, thank his reflexes, thank others that brought his attention to your daughter. Do not thank a mythical being.

If you're going to say it was god that stepped in and 'saved' your daughter, why don't you also blame god for letter her get out there in the first place, or giving her autism such that she would do such a thing?

It IS a problem because it's just an excuse for people to turn off most of their brain and answer anything with 'it's god's will'... And this leads to all sorts of problems as people who do this never bother to look at root causes, or actual solutions, or anything else, because 'things are just like that because of god's will', or they don't do things because 'god will set it right if he feels the need'.

And then you go and say the mother needs a slap... have you looked after an autistic child? Have you looked after ANY child? Do you know how easy it is to let your guard slip, even if just for a minute, and to have them do something you hadn't even considered was a possibility?

CheshireSmilesays...

who gives half a shit about her religion?? honestly? what gives any of YOU the right to judge her for one comment? i'm sure she thanked the man. she told the reporter thank god for that man. i doubt she looked him in the eye and said "thank god for this miracle." also did i mention who cares about her religion and this is america and she's allowed to do what she wants? are you guys like, looking for reasons to hate people?

@spoco2

Right, because no one ever uses the phrase "Thank God" just to express relief and gratitude without meaning it literally and subscribing to exactly the ethos/worldview you just described. Oh, by the way she did indeed thank the guy who saved her girl. So much for your theory.

You did get the "it's difficult to look after an autistic child" thing right. According to both the NY Post article and the one I linked to above, the mom took the girl's brother to the bathroom and during that time the girl managed peel off the partition that covered the narrow gap between the air conditioner and the window frame and squeeze herself through.

What a pile of crap. Firstly, shes not saying praise jesus, Its a commonly used phrase which youre bending to spout your own personal agenda. This isnt the anti- god topic some sifters try to turn everything into, so quit trying.

Secondly, i have two kids and have lived in apartments, if either ended up standing on an a/c unit a slap would be the LEAST i would deserve, and that goes double for a 7 year old with special needs.

Do you have any kids? If so, how the fuck do you NOT consider balconies and windows as danger zones in HIGH RISE apartments? How many kids have you read about falling from them? There was one last week here. The very first thing i did before we moved in was mesh the balcony railings, seal the window latches and give the ground level windows a good kicking. What you DONT do is play the percentages or even worse, not even consider it. Thats how you end up with a 7 year old standing on an a/c unit. *SLAP*

Arguing about religion? That's my cue!

Seriously, both sides make valid points here; that someone who has been raised in a family/societal environment that automatically gives "God" credit for anything good and labels low-chance positive outcomes as "miracles" should say "thank God" (a common expression) and "It's a miracle" in an overwhelming emotional state is unsurprising and perfectly understandable.

On the other hand, there is a big problem with the bolded part above, and religious people using the good works of humankind (e.g. science, bravery, compassion, etc.) to support and propagate supernatural beliefs which on the whole do more harm than good.
Having been raised in an extremely religious environment, I clearly remember the excerpts of Reader's Digest and other magazines/newspapers we were read, pointing to these kinds of exclamations as just more proof for our ridiculous beliefs ("see? even the worldly papers cannot help but acknowledge God's power!"), and you can bet your bottom dollar this story has joined the billion others on Christian sites all over.

I'm an inch to be against religion, but I try to keep neutral about it. But when I had read your comment after thinking that the commenters before you were right, I felt quite wrong. So, thank you for your wisdom and reminding me how to be a better person. >> ^CheshireSmile:

I wasn't trying to argue about the existence of a god, I was expressing my anger that she is a shitty parent that thinks a higher being is going to do her parenting for her. Essentially we're on the same page if for different reasons...>> ^thumpa28:

Wow. You're an asshole. I hope that's actually you're face your using to argumentum ad baculum your way to 'more respect'. I'll know who to avoid.

I, too, am surprised at the comments on this video. As someone said above, it's just an excuse to hate. That impetus certainly seems strong in you.

I can't say the above without giving you another option. You can change it. Corny but very true explanation: http://morethansayings.blogspot.ca/2012/03/battle-between-two-wolves.html>> ^gwiz665:

What's with all the talk about 'hate'?

I never said I hated her, never said anything of the sort. What I was railing against was the general issue of people ascribing good deeds/scientific breakthroughs/amazing engineering to 'miracles'. Hell, just her saying 'thank god' probably wouldn't have rankled that much as it is, as many of you have said, just a common phrase now really. But as soon as someone throws in 'it's a miracle', that usually is leaning on a stronger personal faith that quite often equals an actual belief that these things are the result of god's hand, and not lowly humans doing amazing things.

No hate, just sadness that a mystical being is still being given credit for the good being done (and yet somehow absolved for all the horror).

Ahh, yeah, ok I hadn't re-read rottenseed's comment. It was harsh as hell and doesn't really have a place in civilised discourse!

I'm curious: did you read the links I posted? Did you research this story at all? Because it sounds like you're judging this woman based on one quote you cherry-picked from a YouTube description which was itself cherry-picked by a reporter covering the story. It doesn't bother you at all that your rant at this woman is completely based on your imaginary conjecture of who she is or what actually happened?

EDIT:

This news story seems to confirm your assumptions that this woman is not a great parent, though how religion fits into all of that is still unclear.
