Today there was some mystery brewing about a short film that debuted on YouTube yesterday titled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. The 8 minute long video looks well done (and possibly made with at least some budget), but there is very little info given about who made it and why. There are no credits, but Devin at CHUD figured it out. It’s some kind of demo reel/proof of concept for investors for a new Mortal Kombat movie. With the previous MK attempts falling flat, “gritty realism” seems to be the selling point this time around.
It’s still unclear whether thus is meant directly for investors or simply to show them the appeal of the material, since views and comments on YouTube are a good indicator of how the potential audience would receive the movie.

visually this movie is interesting, however i don't know if i like how they interpreted all these characters..
Baraka is a crazy body-mod doctor?
Sonya Blade is a cop? (she's a special forces member)
and the whole mortal kombat championship is for thugs?

i don't know...this could turn out to be a stinker

afaik MK and MK Annihilation or whatever the second movie was called generally stuck to games in regards to characters. Needless to say, fail (especially the second movie).

Being familiar with all the characters and their back stories from every MK game, I have no qualms about switching it up to be slightly more down to Earth for a movie like this.

Thanks for the extra info! Although I must say, I find the idea that YouTube comments would ever be considered a "good indicator" of how humanity at large would react to something rather excruciatingly disturbing...

meh, this looks to be just as every bit as cheesy as the original movies, but without the actual budget. The problem is the game itself had many magical properties and special effects that the original movie franchise recognized. Frankly if barraka dosn't unleash his blades on the second strike, the movie has already failed.

This looks to have a better CAST, but without the cg ladened fights, forget it.

Gotta say, that jai white guy is insanely good at fighting action. He looks so cool doing it.
He better be fighting at some point ie. most of the film.

I figured he would portray Jax, and after googling that wikipedia page it appears that "Jackson Briggs" is apparently Jax's full name. So, probably. I enjoyed him in Black Dynamite, although it appears the direction for this MK wouldn't go will full-on camp so he'd be different (but probably still good).

@MilkmanDan - Someone mentioned "Blood and Bone" recently and said how white was in it and was good, so i thought i'd check it out. It was actually a really good film, it felt like old fashioned entertainment, similar vibe to the one i got in "Walking Tall" where it was just low-to-no special effects, big muscly guy getting mad and kicking ass.

I was skeptical at first, but the trailer won me over by the end. The cast, cinematography and action all seem above average, so it could work.

I admit I'm getting weary of the silly, over the top, grimdark, ultra-violence of comic book movies like Sin City, 300 and Watchmen. And this seems to be very much in the same vein. But then again that's perfect for the franchise; it was senseless that the previous movies went for the adolescent friendly PG-13 rating.

To me, their complete overhaul of the story and setting is less of an issue. Everything that was interesting about original setting, with out-world and elder gods, has been driven into the ground or ruined by the games past MK2. And honestly, the MK franchise is not really a hit with the kids today, so most nostalgic fans will be in their 20s or 30s now.

director: "Oh, I got a great idea. People like videogames. Let's do a videogame movie."

producer: "videogame movies do terrible"

director "that's ok, i'll take some videogame from the early 90s that the target demographic has some sort of emotional connection to and give it a 'gritty reboot' like all those other franchises that get lapped up by the masses. We'll tack on a half-assed story that only seems like it has depth due to lack of any real narrative to begin with"

producer: "make sure give it some of that viral marketing stuff"

director: "absolutely, it'll sell like hotcakes."

suckers.
