Mike Gravel Explains "The Rock"

Response to Theo47's post
Kevlarsays...

I'll be intrigued by the Sift response. Interested by Gravel as friendly grandfather figure, creeped out by the video, dismissive as a candidate with little chance or plain insulted by the comparison to the Mona Lisa?

All those possible responses you listed out seem full of flowers.
I thought the ad done by those kids was near genius in many aspects.
I keep getting these "oh my god, like, that's soooooo weird" vibes from people who can't handle something different or can't recognize a try at some humanism and I'm not talking about submitter, but from people in general.
And this "he's weird and loony, back to the dark corner with you" mentality is, in a big part, what They want you to think, in case you haven't been watching CNN or Fox. Same thing for Ron Paul and Edwards.
Now, i'm not rooting for anyone or taking sides, just saying. This is typical, you shoot down the little guys and label them as crazies or whatever.
One simple point is that they seem intelligent and they can actually talk and use train of thought without slipping into some political ego zone.
Why the republicans are not rallying behind him and Paul is beyong me, certainly when Big Goverment is trying to silence those two. hint hint.
Now, let this guy have a chance, of course he'll die in the fire, but god damn, we must at least believe in the Illusion of the ability to change shit.
And those two got the less amount of time to speak at the RNC.
The whole race is a show and the winner(s) have already been picked.
Nothing to see here Citizen, Move along. Drive.

I'm all for obscure references and leaving interpretation up to the viewer, but I resent Gravel's (and others') implication that because I'm not floored by his new art house film, I lack metaphoric comprehension. Please. Ripples in a pond, how original and provoking! The two minutes of staring indeed provoked something in me, but I doubt to the filmmakers' desired effect.

Hey if you like it, great, but don't insult my taste by saying I can't handle it or appreciate the "vision". I might have actually enjoyed the clip for its subtle tone had I not been confronted with the man's grill for ten times longer than necessary. I can't wait for some kid to remix it with a jerky zooming effect and creepy droning sounds, and maybe some fire surrounding the frame for good measure. It's quite ripe for reinterpretation!

This, coming from a Gravel fan. He's clearly a nut, but not crazy... the eccentric grandfather kind. I worry that the piece will do him more harm than good, but I can only hope it will spark discussion and increase his reach.
