Macbook Air - Best When Repeatedly Stabbed With Knife

Apple apparently missed a design flaw on the Macbook Air, and don't seem to believe in fixing it, even under warranty. Although this guys disappointment in this seems a little...hmm...extreme?

Apple. Think Violently.

This what I could find:

Some MacBook Air owners who embraced the device in its original iteration (Rev.A) have found that over time, with normal use, the hinge fitting the screen to the body of the laptop becomes irreparably loose, sometimes even catching and cracking.

Discussion about the problem first hit the Apple Support fourm back in Feb. 2008 and appears to be well documented, though as an official matter Apple says it is not a “known” issue.

Reading more it does seem have a design flaw - it's a shame Apple choose not to acknowledge this broadly, instead in some cases blame the consumer - I keep seeing some fanbois on the forums complain that people with cracked hinges 'overworked the hinge that's why it broke' but if you read the problems, it seems Revision A had a big issue with it's hinge...

This is great - I say we need more clips of iSuck product carnage here on the Sift to offset dag's only flaw

It's not a flaw, it's a strength. He believes by using inferior equipment, it forces him to keep his mind sharp and his patience strong.

I have read a bit about this flaw around the traps over the last few months. I have to admit that it's a real dick move for Apple not to fix these under warranty - and ultimately self-defeating.

Everyone knows one button mice are better than multi-button mice, therefore one hinge laptops must be better than two hinge laptops. This is typical PC fanboy crap, you're all too short-sighted to recognise Apple's incredible VISION for the future of portable computing.

This video really makes me want to get a Macbook Air, but I'm waiting for the the next version which isn't even going to open at all.

i doubt he's not going to use the laptop anymore. id say he found out that the entire screen had to be replaced to fix the hinge problem so it doesn't matter if the screen is damaged cuz it'll be replaced anyway.

My DS lite had this problem out of warranty! But in Japan they refurbed it and sent it back FOR free in about a week. Their image there is so important to them. My mum had the same problem, 10 days out of warranty in Australia. The repair cost was the better part of buying a replacement.

I think the lesson here is that westerners do not place a high enough importance on reputation and build quality, so we get shat on (hugs xbox).

I like my macbook. It has some problems... as it was the first generation... specifically the place where the lid make contact with the keyboard has cracked. I waited a while though and now Mac is unofficially repairing this problem.

What? But.. I thought everything with an I- in front of it was infallible perfect? Everything with an apple icon on it was beyond better than any of it's competition?

Heh, for the record, the reason the mac book screen looks better is because that IBM is OOOLD. I have the exact same model, it's from like 1998. But it's still in as good a shape as it was the day I bought it a decade ago, works perfectly, has zero issues.

I have a Rev A Mackbook Air 1,1 which I'm using currently to type this post. I have to admit, I've not had any issue with the hinge. And the screen does in fact look bright and beautiful.

As for Mobile ME, well, Steve Jobs can suck my ass over that worthless travesty.

I have some friends at work who love mobile ME, but I've never seen the value. I suppose synching would be good, but for online storage or image hosting there are so many free options - I use drop box and flickr.

Wow, what a wasteful prick. The guy could have at least donated it to someone who needed a computer if he couldn't live with a small crack in the fucking frame!

I've had laptops break like that, (Dells) and they are still quite usable.

No excuse for his behavior since he's obviously well off enough to afford to stab a working machine with a knife AND buy a new machine. Stop crying about not getting a refund from Apple. If he hadn't destroyed the machine and instead just given it away or overlooked a small blemish on the outer casing I'd have sided with the guy.
