Loop the Loop in a real car

Duration 4 minutes 56 seconds.

The Fifth Gear team attempts to perform a full 360 degree loop in a full size car.

I'm quite surprised that the perfect speed was only 36 MPH. I would have figured that it would be notably faster. Also, I assumed that there wouldn't be much downside to going "too fast"; clearly the g-forces would increase, but I thought the increase wouldn't be overly fast with respect to increased speed. Also, momentary exposure to g-force would be a lot less likely to black you out than a very prolonged pull.

So very cool to have my assumptions be proven wrong, and lots of fun to watch!

Yeah, I'll call bullshit as well on "he couldn't have gone any faster". I bet he could have gone even 10MPH faster. At some point, it becomes difficult to control, but the g-forces aren't much of an issue because it's very brief.

I think that physicist nearly screwed them. What did he calculate, some minimum acceleration trajectory? Because the car was pretty much off the track at the top of the loop which is very dangerous. Maybe they should have paired that physicist with an engineer and made sure they were optimizing the right thing.

I think you're missing one of the points they briefly mention about not being able to go faster. It was actually down to the fact that if he went much faster, the force on the metal loop structure would have been too much in this particular case. Sure if they had built a stronger loop, then you could go faster, if you could withstand the increased g force.

^ I didn't know Fifth Gear was ever anything BUT a complete rip off of Top Gear, and a piss poor one at that.

The thing that makes Top Gear fascinating for me is the hosts by and large. The challenges are pretty cool (The Shuttle one still ranks as one of my favourite moments on tv), but it's the hosts that make them entertaining.

Having said that... this was pretty awesome

Fifth Gear is actually a continuation of the old Top Gear. They wanted to keep the name "Top Gear" but BBC did not allow this so they used the name Fifth Gear.
The new format Top Gear was launched later in 2002 and has been a blessing to all of mankind ever since.

We are talking about Channel Five here, a channel whose sister station was named 'Fiver' because that's how much its television shows cost to make. Or that's what one of the Spice Girls told me.
