Do cops in England not have guns?

As a general practice, they do not carry guns. It's an issue of apparent debate over there, terrorism being one of many debatable points. I doubt being armed with pistols would have helped in this situation. When a cop pulls a gun, it's generally because he intends to use it. Even though these guys were overpowered and in uncertain danger, I imagine the outcry would have been pretty huge if there was a tidy video showing English cops shooting a bunch of unarmed drunk guys.

Pepper spray sure would have been handy.

Looked to me like when he pulled out his baton, it set them off. Ofcourse, I can't hear what was being said, but his attempt to threaten them with it appears to have backfired.

Producing a weapon puts a finality to the situation, be it a stick, knife, firearm, etc. No matter what, you see someone who's potentially about to seriously harm you, it's 'fight or flight'. I think the case here shows that you should read the moment very carefully before upping the stakes.

I think just the presence of a gun would have done the trick here. I dont know about you, but if you point a gun at me Im more likely going to comply.

Brainstorm. Issue every police officer with a taser and dock a week's pay from any officer who uses it on someone. If a situation is urgent enough that they're willing to give up their hard-earned wages it is probably an appropriate time to use the taser. Not perfect, but it's better than not giving them the means to defend themselves.

Or you could argue that the police enforce a wide variety of unjust and oppressive laws and should all be executed.
