I have a hard time thinking of any reasonably usable knock that wouldn't be easy to eavesdrop on.

Get rid of the PVC and make the thing look half way decent and you got yourself a decent invention that some geek would buy.

As a proof of concept, its brilliant. In production, you'd just replace the entire dead-bolt mechanism, I'm sure.

actually the next model up stuffs the PVC pipes with C4, for wrong knocks

That was my initial thought.

However, one potential benefit would be the complete removal of external lock components, though I suspect many more locks are defeated by breaking the doorframe than by picking.

Obviously, it's not designed to be a practical device, but I'm still racking my brain trying to come up with practical uses. Perhaps if it were set to "lock only", it would allow someone to lock up after they left.
