I think the Julia Roberts stuff was from when Dave was out due to heart surgery and they were running some previously aired clips.

in the early days of the letterman show Dave was almost a stalker of julia roberts, he talked about her every show just about and had her on many times, sometimes a few days in a row. it got weird for a while.

she even called dave her stalker

he was totally infatuated with her. and it's always been a running joke on the show.
