The only reasons I can think of for such a swarm would either be a ladybug orgy, or that they've found a concentration of aphids.

Those look like the the devil's beetle (my term), the asian variety. They have to natural predators around here and are vastly overpopulated. I've vacuumed up more of those than I care to remember.

I remember seeing swarms as a kid in a local mountain. I went bonker and caught them to bring home.
