Kim Johnson - Thorium Chemically Engineered on the Fly

I had the pleasure of meeting Kim Johnson at this years Thorium Energy Alliance meeting. Kim talks very fast; his knowledge and enthusiasm is tremendously infectious, even when you only understand a twentieth of what he is saying! He is the kind of smart person that makes things happen, and he sends me lots of goodies to read though. It is a pleasure to share in his knowledge and zeal towards thorium reactors.

Notes on the video:

TRU's are transuraniucs, or things heavier than Uranium. TRU's typically have mid-level half lives in the order of a few thousand years, the represent the main difficulty in waste management for reactors. The normal fission products usually are gone within about 20 years, almost 90% are gone in 100 years, and after 300 years their radiation is less than background levels.

There is lots of good information in the slides, I recommend trying to find a pause point or watching the video twice to read on the slide information. Lot of good stuff there that he doesn't say directly, especially on the geomagnetism and layer boundary sections.

Epithermal refers the neutron energy of the reactor. Most reactors slow down neutrons to before fission, epithermal is a hotter spectrum than most reactors run at, but is blow "fast" spectrum, which is the hottest spectrum before fusion spectrum.

I hope you enjoy, and if you have any questions, I would love to attempt to answer them...if I can, Kim is about 30 pay grades smarter than myself.
