JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR - King Herod's Song

eric3579says...

Jesus, I am overjoyed to meet you face to face.
You've been getting quite a name all around the place.
Healing cripples, raising from the dead.
And now I understand you're God,
At least, that's what you've said.
So, you are the Christ, you're the great Jesus Christ.
Prove to me that you're divine; change my water into wine.
That's all you need do, then I'll know it's all true.
Come on, King of the Jews.
Jesus, you just won't believe the hit you've made around here.
You are all we talk about, the wonder of the year.
Oh what a pity if it's all a lie.
Still, I'm sure that you can rock the cynics if you tried.
So, you are the Christ, you're the great Jesus Christ.
Prove to me that you're no fool; walk across my swimming pool.
If you do that for me, then I'll let you go free.
Come on, King of the Jews.
I only ask what I'd ask any superstar.
What is it that you have got that puts you where you are.
I am waiting, yes I'm a captive fan.
I'm dying to be shown that you are not just any man.
So, if you are the Christ, yes the great Jesus Christ
Feed my household with this bread.
You can do it on your head.
Or has something gone wrong. Jesus, why do you take so long?
Oh come on, King of the Jews.
Hey! Aren't you scared of me Christ?
Mr. Wonderful Christ?
You're a joke. You're not the Lord.
You are nothing but a fraud.
Take him away.
He's got nothing to say!
Get out you King of the,
Get out King of the,
Oh get out you King of the Jews!
Get out of here!
Get out of here you,
Get out of my life.

Despite all the flaming extravaganza of this scene, when you're watching this movie you'll find yourself with almost a tear in your eye. Thinking 'if you'll just do one small thing, all will be ok'. Instead he stands mute and horrified at the spectacle and does nothing.

Of all the affront the christians put up over this movie, it makes me stand in awe of christ more than any of their drivel.

I have to say, I am NOT a fan of this version of the song. The singing, at least. The studio album was so much better. I think it's one of the only performances in this I prefer in the albums to the movie (Other than the goofy voices of the pharises.. phar.. However that goes.)

Having just heard both of the songs, I actually prefer the movie version. He's a worse singer, certainly, but the album one that @Duckman33 seems too polished to me. I like the super campy style and "roughness" of the movie version.

My problem with this version is he puts absolutely no emotion or feeling into the song. It sounds robotic and stiff like he's just going through the motions and really isn't enjoying singing it at all.

P.S. Alice Cooper recorded a demo of this song for the original soundtrack too. I didn't like his version much either.

@Duckman33 I get the exact opposite feeling! The film version is done with a smirk and it clear that Herod is a crappy king, the album version tells me "standard, cardboard hero". Which I think makes it boring.

Film Herod reminds me of Jon Lovitz. Weird that we have such an opposite reaction.

I think for me, I grew up listening to the album version for years before I saw the movie, so I'm kind of partial to it. I have noticed folks (me included) tend to gravitate towards the first version of a song they hear and mildly like or even hate other versions, even if the other version was the original recording.

Why didn't they just shoot Jesus? I mean, why make a great big deal of it with the crucifying and the spearing? Just switch one of those SMGs to full rock n roll and empty a couple clips into his ass. Bronze age people, SHEESH.

Funny, I was just thinking of this movie not long ago and thinking "Man. If he had shown just ONE goddamn thing to Herod, Pilate, basically, anyone that could.. you know, do something. He would've converted all of the Romans, Jews, and non-believers on the spot.

He wouldn't have ruined his life, Judas' life, and Pilates life (The latter two going down in history for basically being the ones who betrayed Jesus, even though Pilate basically does nothing but try to help him, and Judas just wanted them to help out more goddamn poor people)

..Basically, if this was all part of 'Gods plan', he planned that REALLY fucking poorly."

It's funny that a kind of religious movie is the thing to re-affirm my Atheism.

I like the movie version more. While the album one is sung by the better singer with better technique, the movie version performs the emotion better. This Herod is a worse singer but he worries less about the actual singing and more about performing the emotional state of the character. It's more an acting performance which, given the text and intention of the song, makes it IMO better. Alice Cooper's version isn't bad (better than the Album version) but I prefer this one more. Herod comes across as more condescending, arrogant and sarcastic in the movie. The singing is not that good (still better than the mixing of the song) but it has emotional truth that the album version is lacking.

I prefer the album version but this one's not bad.
