Edensays...I wonder what the time spent in compulsory national military service in Israel does to the mindset of individuals who would otherwise agree to end the occupation?
tnaransays...My understanding is a significant portion of the compulsory military doesn't care for the occupation. There are even peace movements within the military.
aaronfrsays...When you make something compulsory, it tends to generate resentment against both the politicians and the institutions. Look at U.S. citizen reaction following the institution of a draft during Vietnam, for example.
They're like the "silent majority" of U.S. citizens who want to withdraw from Iraq (66% last time I checked) but with even worse political representation. And honestly, withdrawal to pre-1967 borders and the splitting/internationalizing of Jerusalem are the only way there will ever be peace. Most intelligent and rational people understand that, be they Palestinian, Israeli, or otherwise.
