Our neighbor has a grown border collie who is very intelligent as well. They tend to be EXTREMELY intense and appear to not ever have much fun. The neighbor dog spends all her time herding our young kids. Good dog but maybe not a "fun" dog.

They're great dogs. Very smart, but not for everyone.
Mine was extremely loving, giving, talkative .. and in every way wonderful.

She was gentle as possible as I watched her nurture kittens, ferocious as she defended me against a german shephard which tried to lunge at me .. and my ever present friend who ate pop corn and watched movies with me. 15 years of kindness ..

She just died this last Christmas Eve.
I miss her.

Unless you have acreage, and the dog gets worked and played with EVERY day, if you own a border collie, you are abusing it. A border collie cannot be penned, tied up, or ignored any more than you can.

That is, unless you've trained it to sift videos, then that's ok. Don't expect any upvotes for cat videos though.

Not being funny but you ain't caesar milan, i really don't think you should be blanketly accusing non-farming collie owners of abuse.

Yeah, i'm a dog owner from a dog owning family (bismillah!), i/we have had many breeds, including collies. No farm, though.

I was more setting up the joke in the second part, but if you're not spending time in a park or somewhere it can run almost daily, it will suffer. This is from personal history and friends who breed Border Collies.

"we're not playin' bring it"
I wonder if the dog ever does play.
It is way too calm and attentive for a 3 month old puppy. Something seems odd to me.

Maybe it's calm because it does get plenty of play time? Does it occur to anyone that the reason it's well behaved and calm is that it's already worked out it's energy running around?

This looks like a very well looked after dog. It's doing set pieces for the camera, so no, it's not running around being disobedient (all those scenes would have been cut!).

agreed; notice how the video cuts just after the dog is supposed to release the item from her jaw and place it in the owners hand. i never managed to get my very intelligent jack russel dog to do this (deceased) she loved playing fetch.. but had some weird instinct thing kick in when it got to the 'give him the ball so he can throw it again' bit.. it was like 'i know i want to give him the ball, so he can throw it again, but at the same time, he wants the ball, and its in my jaw, so he can't have it'.. she never seemed to make the connection between not giving ball back = end of fetch game.

If someone were to make a video containing endless sequences Border Collie puppies playing with cute kittens, then show it at the U.N., we'd have world peace by next Tuesday.

"Ahmadinajad, which would you rather have: a nuclear bomb, or CUTESY-WOOTSY PUPPY-WHUPPIES? C'mon, Somali Warlords, these kitten have snuggles and purrs for you and . . . KIM IL-JONG, YOU SPIT OUT MR. BARKY RIGHT THIS SECOND!!"

I had a border collie, and when I'd put a ball next to a biscuit, and tell him which one to choose, he'd always choose the one I asked for.

And one time when I was running to catch a football, I started to edge closer to the road. He ran behind me and nipped at my heels, making me miss the football, but stay out of the road. A second later a car flew past. So my dog saved my life.

And like burd, I miss my dog a lot.

The attention span of the average dog is very short at 3 months, BC's are fucking neurotic, Like sifters, but this dog is really attentive, like more attentive than all of the working "goose" dogs I have seen at 6 months, doing the BC thing for a living. It seems Odd to me, and it should to you, but I forgot, you are all fucking experts in dog obedience and the breeding and care of border collies.

P.S. if you aren't aware of what a goose dog is....

Some years ago my aunt and uncle taught their golden retriever to bring in the paper when they let her out in the morning. A few days later they found every paper from the neighborhood had been brought to their door.
