Important Wisdom Everyone Must Ponder

Neil DeGrasse Tyson shares an important piece of wisdom.

I'm reading a fascinating book called The Spell of the Sensuous and the ultimate philosophy is the same.. except it explores how our sensations, perceptions, and language are, also, inextricably stitched to the natural world.

Why did I picture ugly, fat old stars, in trench coats, spewing their seed forth across the heavens? Doesn't make me feel connected to anything but a hot, soapy shower. With antispetic soap.

I have to upvote for just that line, "It's not that we're better then the universe, we're part of the universe".

It's hard for me to understand, but many people think we are better then the universe. So much so that there must have been something outside the universe to create us. And since they can't see this creator, they use all of their imagination trying to envision how awesome and brilliant the he must be. Never understanding that even their imagination is just one small product of the natural world that they dismiss.

Whatever they'd say, I'd just interpret it the same way I hear everything they say:

"Blarg hnork ubble wuggle blunf yap yap fnargle"

or some variation thereof.

Carl Sagan put it this way in his wonderful series Cosmos: "We are all made of the dust of stars". That line really stuck with me.

ummm seriously... i could also say:

We all eat plants so we all share the same compost.

We are all part of the same fertilizer residues.

We shared steak from the same cow....we are all part of that mystical cow.

Our solar system all comes from the same dust.
We are all part of the asteroids around Uranus.

I think it's more interesting to point out our body is made of millions and millions of cells, bacteria and other symbiotic organisms that grow and function together. We are not one creature....but a host of millions of creatures with a single consiousness.

Or if you prefer - we are all wet blobs of cosmic crap.

There a lot of under-educated comments on this thread. Go ahead guys, say "lol he's full of crap" "lol we're just as much connected because we all eat a cow"

That's the way you debunk a respected scientist. Via videosift. With no qualifications. With scorn and sarcasm. Instead of a spirit of inquiry.

The guy's right, you just can't lift your mind high enough to understand him.

Now... tell me why humans have to make up fantastical fictional characters to explain existence, when existence itself is so fascinating on it's very own?

Why? Because people are superstitious, selfish, and ultimately naive. Naive about everything. Themselves, the universe, everything.

I am not an exception to this.

It's not that we are necessarily stupid. It is that we are innately close minded and restricted to that which makes us 'feel' comfortable. Rather than 'hearing the music' we prefer to hear our own voice. Even when the evidence stares us straight in the eyes at bats us in the face with it's proverbial DICK.

This is one of the dozen or so videos I wanted to try this new ability on when you introduced it back in the days. But I forgot ...

So here we go, albeit somewhat delayed: *quality

I dont realy understand hwo what he is saying is that philasophical.

We are part of the universe and we are made of the same matter that makes that universe .

I guess that might be mind blowing to sumone that belive sin mystical shit but to annyone else its such a inane and obvouse statment its hardly of philasophical merrit (asuming your educated and over the age of say 10).

Allso its quite bezar to be so emotive about it.

Part of me likes it when scentists try to make sience emotive as it can atract people to science but ultimetly its disingneouse to claim anny 1 thing is more amazing than another in an ultimate sense or to be realy emotive over 1 scentific fact and not so about another.

The statistics are such that you even share at least a few atoms with almost any historical figure you can think of. Not Elvis, too recent. Not enough time to spread around. But you all probably share a few atoms with say, Joan of Arc, a T-Rex and even, dare I say... Mr. Christ?
