I thought the same thing about the time slot issue. I doubt Leno would have been successful at all if the "Johnny Carson Show" came on an hour before his show when he started. It's just inconsiderate and Howard makes a good point about the money.

So you had your TV show, you want another one at least give the new guy a chance!

Jay Leno was fired by NBC?

Back in 2004 Jay Leno renewed his contract with NBC for an additional 5 years. A few months later it was announced that Jay had decided to retire at the end of his contract and that Conan would be taking over the Tonight Show.

I guess Howard is suggesting that Jay was really fired back in 2004. But if NBC wanted him gone back in 2004, why would they have renewed his contract for 5 YEARS? And why would they force out Jay, who had great ratings, in favor of Conan, who had a fraction of the audience? The official story seems more likely, that Jay thought at the time that he'd want to retire in 5 years. Hell maybe NBC wanted a 10 year contract and Jay just wasn't willing to commit.

I guess it's possible to imagine some scenario where Jay Leno was both renewed for 5 years and forced out at the same time. But unless there's a good reason to think that it doesn't seem likely.

Of course all of Howard's points about Jay being an ass and unfunny are right on.

you can tell howard is used to taking a point someone brings up and running with it for an hour or two like on his show. he tries to keep talking about every point but the morning show host has to keep moving for time.

Aye good point cheshire, i like the "talk a point to completion" more than the morning show mentality just personally. That of course only applies when the point is worth talking about.

I'm not a Leno fan so don't take this the wrong way but it amazes me that even after Jay explained the whole thing, idiots like Howard Stern still don't have it straight. You'd think someone in entertainment would at least get the facts straight. This is another one of Stern's horrible attempts to get back into the splotlight that stopped shining on him when he went to satellite radio. If there's anything that has gone downhill it is Stern's show since he went to Sirius.

I personally have no use for the man, but at least he used to have credibility as a "Shock Jock". Now he just preaches to the converted. You lose something in that genre when the only people who'll listen to what you say are already fans.
