How to permanently fix "global warming"

"It's horrible" ... smartest thing she said.

W....Why are people saying "Why is this stupid" or "this isn't as stupid as you think it is"..!?

It's really bloody stupid! Even if you can forgive her for thinking that, if her knowledge is so small that she doesn't realise such a basic problem with the idea, and you can forgive that..... why the hell didn't she think the same thing about fridges? Cos everyone has a fridge. We could all just leave the doors open an hour of every day until the problem is gradually solved. I mean, she's doubly stupid for NOT suggesting/thinking the same about fridges, because then at least her idiocy would be uniform, and a degree of problem solving skill in her ignorance.

Ordinary air conditioners could only increase global mean temperature due to the law of conservation of energy. But if the condenser coils are in a vacuum surrounded by glass on top and a mirror on the bottom, then they just radiate into space.

I concede that she was lacks a complete understanding of heat transfer and basic thermodynamics.

That said, people are actively working on heat sequestering. There are types of air conditioners that are essentially a heat pumps. This idea, in particular, is one that people are interested in. Because the earth is not a closed system we don't have to worry about the 2nd law.

My point would be: making giant heat sink is not the craziest solution anyone has ever proposed for global warming.

Well, if the suggestion is in essence to develop a cooling mechanism on a planetary terraformer scale, it's no less intelligent than ignoring the problem. Lets be optimistic, at least she's not a denier.

We've already got a global air conditioning system, it's called the hydrological cycle. It was working pretty darned well until we started screwing with its essential components, chopping down and burning the trees that were storing the sun's heat, converting the land to agriculture whose stored energy we're only releasing by eating the food produced. Add to that the industrial revolution, now we're burning fossil fuels, containing sun's energy stored from millions of years ago.

Much of the desert we see today was once forest. If you consider that fact, this is where the potential for terraforming really hits home. Restart the hydrological cycle in areas where we've destroyed it through deforestation, use technologies like seawater greenhouses on a wide scale, use them to grow food and forest, then we're starting to solve the problem.

Of course, that's not exactly what she said...

Um, let's bring the conversation back down to the level it started at.

This is dumb because anybody who has ever examined an air conditioner will notice that cold air comes out of one side, and hot air comes out of the other.

You don't need to know anything further about the laws of thermodynamics to know why she's an idiot.

And if you don't there's no helping you.

Another thermodynamic possibility for reducing global mean temperature is using wind/solar power to shoot giant lasers into space. But it may be a wash due to solar power's effect on albedo and wind power's effect on convection. Hydroelectric power would be legit for that but not available in sufficient quantity to make a difference.
