How to Spot Fake Gold

Of course, I just happen to carry an acid dropper and test slate with me all the time, and none of my friends are at all concerned when I start scraping their jewelery against it. Marvelous party trick, goes down a treat.

bite it. gold may be heavy, but it's soft. soft enough that your teeth should leave a mark. in the cartoons, whenever someone bit a coin, they weren't testing to see if it would bend, they were looking for teeth marks.

Yeah let me know how well that works with 14k gold okay? When you're buying new teeth I'll be here still standing around mocking you too. Doesn't work very well with 24k either.

Seems like a good way to scratch the crap out of a perfectly good ring.. I wonder how much actual dmg that leaves behind or if the slate is a very fine consistency, like high grade wet/dry sandpaper, so that it doesn't do much damage...
