How to Direct Traffic in Iraq

Simple, and effective...

I think it's understandable for the soldier to threaten the oncoming vehicle like that, given the nature of the insurgency over there. You can see the bomb clearing robot on the left which he's trying to keep the motorists from approaching, it's not like he can go put out the witches hats and road signals.

As I understand it, any vehicle that approaches a US position rapidly is immediately regarded as potentially dangerous. Simply because some of these hasty vehicles do attempt to deliver explosives. The important point here is that the soldier did NOT fire, allowing the driver to pull back into traffic.

Ofcourse, it would be preferable that he not need to be there in the first place, etc. etc... but that's another story. I'm not trying to condone the occupation with my comments, it should be noted, just trying to make sure people don't get the wrong idea about the soldiers commendable demonstration of restraint.

I never said there was anything wrong with it. This is, obviously, just one soldier doing his job, which is directing traffic away from whatever it is his unit is doing. That he is using a gun to aid him is only because he is in a war zone, where, unfortunately, the gun is a primary all purpose tool... and aiming it at the vehicles is the clearest way he can signal them to get the fuck over... a tactic I am sure construction workers and traffic control police in this country sometimes wish they could employ.

Yes, Bonny,

It is true that if a vehicle approached a US position rapidly, a soldier allowed to aim at the vehicle, and after some form of communication (time permitting) to signal to slow down/stop, and they do not do so, he is permitted to fire upon the vehicle on order to stop it.
