Video Flagged Dead

Going the Speed Limit

A video of an experiment done by some students. What happens when people actually drive the speed-limit on the highways?
nihilosays...

Yeah... these people are idiots. They would have caused a similar traffic backup by driving four across at 65 mph without letting people pass them. How does obstructing traffic make their point? And the danger of driving 55 that they claimed to show was actually the danger of blocking the whole highway and forcing people to get around you on the shoulder.

Sure 55mph is slow, but as they say.. its not enforced. Maybe they are trying to get a 70mph speed limit that is enforced? I understand frustration with a low speed limit that is not the actual speed limit, but try to prove your point in a way that isn't a public nuisance.

In Ontario, a couple of people tried this stunt on the 401. They had their licenses suspended and they were charged with obstructing traffic. As far as I'm concerned these people should have gotten the same treatment.

dead-duplicate from waaay back in the day... i've mentioned this video in conversation more than a few times.

the point made in the video is that everyone is breaking the law, so why are individuals who break the law only slightly more (80 instead of 75) ticketed as if they're recklessly going 80 in a 55... and I would argue to the point that if everyone is breaking the law anyone can be pulled over at anytime, making profiling that much easier (cops can fish for drivers deemed likely to have no insurance or whathaveyou).

their point is right, laws are there to be observe if they don't make sense why to have them? I an glad they pissesed of people so that they do their duty and ask their congress man to fix those stupid ass laws.

joshbsays...

That guy is actually arguing that he shouldn't get a ticket for going 80 in a 55 because it's only "5 over" what everybody else is doing... What a dumb-ass. This was hardly a scientific experiment, they were so biased going into it. In most places, driving the speed limit is not dangerous. Stay in the right lane and you won't be bothering anybody.

This is a pretty stupid experiment. The signs that read "Left lane is for passing only" are there for a reason.

It is very, very, very rare for five cars to be going the exact same speed in a line. OFCOURSE that is going to cause traffic jams, etc. I agree with joshb, people who want to drive the speed limit just stay in the right lane and it wont bother anyone.
