Female MMA Fighter Chokes Out Reporter

The rear naked choke can be done as a "blood choke", where the arteries on either side of the neck are cut off, or as an "air choke", where you simply can't breathe. The blood choke is quite a bit faster, taking about 4 seconds, whereas the air choke usually takes around 10. Neither is harmful provided you let go when the person passes out, particularly the air choke which is applied here.

My understanding is that the blood choke is banned in UFC because it's "dangerous", but I think it's really banned because it's just too fast.

a) it took her more than 3 seconds, whereas she claims she can do the other 'pro' person in 3 seconds
b) she's an asshole. The guy said that although he doesn't agree, some people say women aren't as capable as men. What he meant by that was obviously you can kick my ass. Outta nowhere she decided to choke him, he didn't ask nothing.

IIRC, in a fairly large portion of the population, pinching off the veins/arteries in the neck can sometimes cause the vessels to "stick" closed, causing death/stroke/brain damage. It is very dangerous.

The translation given to the fighter was:

"American bitchman is saying you are weak and he thinks you should be home cooking and cleaning house. How long do you think you need to knock him out?"

Chokes in MMA are strangulation chokes which may compromise the airway, but are mostly compression of the carotid arteries and jugular veins. Much more force is required to compress the trachea, than is required to impede blood flow.

Police are not allowed to use them, because if applied for too long they can cause death and cops like to get creative and stick things like batons and nightsticks in there which can crush the windpipe or break the hyoid bone.

In MMA chokes that involve the blood vessels of the neck are perfectly safe as long as the ref and medical staff are able to respond after loss of consciousness.

BTW, one could conceivably train anyone to choke out a reporter with a rear naked if they don't think it's coming.

I just dug up the UFC rules and it seems I've been mislead. There's no rule about what types of chokes can be performed. In light of this I find it odd that the BJJ technique usually applied focuses more on the airway than the arteries.

I would like to see some evidence of "stuck" arteries. I'm not finding any.
