Today, on 14 October 2012, Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner reached a speed of Mach 1.24 (370 m/s, 1342 km/h, 834 mph), becoming the first human to travel at supersonic speed in free fall or outside of an airplane.
After 5 years of preparation, his giant helium balloon took him to an altitude of 39,044 meters (128,097 feet or 24ΒΌ miles), from where he descended towards Earth during 4 minutes and 22 seconds in free fall before opening his parachute. The vertical distance of his freefall was measured at 36,529 metres (119,846 ft)..."
