Video Flagged Dead
Major depression is the most common mental illness in the world, and in the U.S. alone it accounts for 30,000 suicide deaths annually. Everyone can stand to learn a little more about this serious illness.

Having a "negative perspective" isn't normal? I prefer the term "cynical, sarcastic asshole."

Also, the "fact" that 90% of people that commit suicide have a mood disorder isn't really fact based. The statistic is wholly based on post-suicide diagnosis. Basically, it's someone thinking "anyone that kills themselves has to be crazy," and using that bias to say that the person was suffering from a mental illness. Only approximately 20% of the people who kill themselves(in most studies) were diagnosed prior to suicide.

Not trying to say suicide or depression is any less serious that this guy is trying to express. But I hate lies told to try to boost outrage over something most people find horrifying in the first place.

Nithernsays...

There's depression, which we all get from time to time. And then there's Depression, which should be diagnosis by a medical doctor or psychistrist. A good book to get, for anyone, with a love one that may have Depression is:

"Talking to Depression" by Claudia J. Strauss.

The book will do something good, start the conversation. Knowing what to say, and even what to do when the person answers with silence. Depression is a very rough illness on the person effected. Every day, is a battle they wage. The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can help them over come it. It wont be easy, nor handled in a short amount of time. But the sooner your ready to help that person, the sooner the darkest hour of their life will be over.

Nithernsays...

Two points.

This guy says that the best treatment is the drugs. I've read much to say that therapy helps more. Using a therapy treatment with a medication program would have the best chance of over coming despression.

The second is, he reports that more women then men, are daignosed with Depression. But that's not entirely truthful, as in the USA, more women then men, will go to a theraphist to find out what the problem is, and work on a solution. An that is to bad, given the number of males in the USA, suffering needlessly, when treatment is there, and easy to obtain.

If you think someone might have serious Depression. Get them to go see a medical doctor or a psychologist. Offer to drive them, pay the bill, what ever. The longer Depression persists, the harder it will be on that person.
