Extreme Amnesia - Less Than 30secs Memory

deputydogsays...

From the YT poster...

'This guy is in a perpetual state of waking. Every few seconds he thinks he is waking from a kind of coma. Every time he sees his wife he thinks it's for the first time in months, even though it could only be seconds.'

He seems to have partially effective procedural memory and semantic memory, but not much episodic memory. For example, he remembers that there are such things as O-Levels and that chicken is a food, and he remembers how to play piano, but he can't remember what his wife said a few moments ago or what specific foods taste like.

And he knows he's missing time. He thinks he has seen no doctors and no one has tried to help him. How tragic.

(More on memory here. I took a cognitive psych class with Tulving in 1983-84 and it was awesome.)

although, sad ... i found this extremely touching (yes, i shed a tear)! i'm happy that he at least remembers his wife (albeit his 2nd wife, whom he married a year before his illness) ... i love the way he hugs her every time she comes back into the room.

here's a full documentary on clive and his condition. absolutely amazing!!

thanks for this vid, mr dog!

LadyBugsays...

did you know that his wife actually divorced him ... they only remarried in 2002 ... and still then, they don't live together!

i don't know why but this had made me terribly weepy and mushy!! *looks for my husband*

It's very sweet the way he seems to come to life the moment his wife walks into the room, and at the same time tragic that the same thing would happen if she had only been out of the room for 5 minutes to get a glass of water.

...gotta' luv Dr. Kaku!

He knows to hold the door open, and how to use a fork & knife, and how to hug and kiss.

As a performing musician, I'd be interested to know more of what he remembers musically...he obviously remembers HOW to read, and the layout of the keyboard...I wonder if he can play songs by memory (without the score), and if he knows any music history information, or musical experiences and performances that he's previously had.

(I may have to find time to check the full documentary link)

That is the scariest thing i've ever seen. I should had a note in my will: "If that ever happens to me, shoot me".

Reminds me of the movie "50 First Dates" with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Barrymore's character only held memory for a day at max...and some other guy only had 10 seconds of memory. I used to think it was exaggerated until seeing this clip.

LadyBugsays...

well ... i will have you all know that my husband's newest, fun-est phrase du jour is: i don't know; you're the first human beings i've met!

*giggles*

Westy, is LSD gonna help? I'm assuming a huge dose of confusion and mind-bending hallucinogens is possibly counter-productive in this case?

If you liked this clip, you might want to take a look at this very good movie:

Memento (2000)

'Memento chronicles two separate stories of Leonard (Guy Pearce), a ex-insurance investigator who can no longer build new memories, as he attempts to find the murderer of his wife, which is the last thing he remembers. One story line movies forward in time while the other tells the story backwards revealing more each time.'
