When I saw the movie and they first mentioned Unobtanium, I though he was making a nerdy joke... if he had been it would have been awesome, unfortunately it wasn't and it's one of the very few and minor things I didn't like about Avatar.

I thought Sigourney was a low spot in this flick. Also the floating mountains.. its all qualifies for "suspense of disbelief" until you get to the giant floating mountains.

According to an earlier draft of the script, then named project 880, the name unobtanium is explained to have been a joke-name, within the universe, which stuck to the stuff.

I wish they had made some comedic reference to the name, like the first time they mentioned it they could have said something like "We're looking for this, Unobtanium, dumbest name ever, but it's easier than [long scientific sounding name]". Or if they just called it something that wasn't dumb sounding.
