OK, it's a *terrible idea to release all that mercury into the local environment and a *terribly stupid record that anyone on Earth could break if he or she wanted.

There's a few milligrams of mercury vapor in a typical bulb. So that would release a few grams in total. It's outside and will dissipate fairly quickly. A typical coal fired power plant emits much much MUCH more.
