Downhill Couch Racing - Holy Crap!

I would just like to hear the conversation between these guys before they decided to do this. I'm sure one of them was trying to convince the other two it was a good idea.

"Hey man, let's go down that big hill over there on a couch.... Ahh come on.... We'll wear helmets!"

Not long the other two say, "ok, as long as we have helmets"

There needs to be a *stupid channel or a *darwin channel or something for videos like this. Situations where the massive amount of pain experienced could be avoided simply by thinking about what they are about to do.

i love how it ran the guy over, tossed them out, and then smacked into them at the fence.
that earns a ...... MMMMMMMMMMMMONSTERKILL!!!!! for the couch bike thing.
what a great study of crash physics. wonderful!

one thing i'd like to note is that they looked to be conscious atleast until the bottom, as they were contracting muscles in the arms and waist just a little, even while flayling like rag dolls.

Most serious spinal cord injuries (as in >50% of paraplegics and quadraplegics) occur to people under the age of 20 in vehicle or diving accidents. And >80% are males.

... upon further review, I would like to modify my comment, as the first kid to hit the hay (the one in the middle) appears to be unconscious in the air. He hits the ground very hard right after the couch flips

Do they hit that person on the ground, seated, facing downhill at the middle mark, causing the couch to flip? blaaarg! looks like it might just catch on their picnic blanket, but I can't tell.

I think what makes this video so morbidly entertaining is the ammount of crap that goes wrong, from the person getting run-over halfway down to the getting-hit-by-the-tumbling-couch finale. You can just tell from the opening frame that no good will come out of this.

After watching that a number of times, it looks an awful lot like it's little kids on the sofa. In the slow-mo replay, right before they hit the fence, you can see one of the flying people is wearing short purple shorts and has a small scrawny leg flapping in the air. It's also mostly small kids standing on the right side of the track just before the sofa goes airborne. The sofa did not appear to moving fast enough to flip several full grown people through the air that many times. One of the people rushing to help at the very end looks somewhat dad-like. And a sofa racing event is awfully similar to a soapbox racing event which is a stereotypical kid thing.

I don't think that its children on the couch. Its hard to tell, but it doesn't really look like kids, but more like late teens or early twenties, and the whole thing looks like some kind of staged event. If it is children, then this whole thing should not have been allowed to happen.

Hey, unfortunately my boyfriend was on of those boys on there. This event is the furnature event of the Sandblast competition which used to be a yearly event in Prince George, B.C. Canada. None of them were seriously injured, they broke all the records in the furnature comp, however all of their prizes went to the person they ran over. Needless to say this was the last time anyone competed in Sandblast. If They hadn't flew off the couch when they did they would all be dead becasue there was a semi sitting at the bottom that they would have hit.

If that person wasn't that close to the track in the first place, they wouldn't have gotten run over... It's not like you can control a couch on wheels.
