Differences between Paralympics, Olympics & Special Olympics

"Olympic sports are contested in the Summer Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games. They are Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics. Besides, there are two more Olympics. They are Special Olympics and Paralympics. Now you understand there are 4 types of Olympics. Now let’s go about their basic differences. The Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organisation for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, not to be confused with the Paralympic Games, as it so often is. The difference between the two is subtle, but crucial nonetheless. Indeed, the Special Olympics is for individuals with intellectual disabilities, whereas the Paralympics is generally for athletes with any disability, including physical, and only at an elite level. The history of the Paralympic movement is relatively new and goes back to 1948, when Sir Ludwig Guttmann introduced the first Stoke Mandeville Games for World War II veterans with spinal cord-related injuries. The Olympics include the summer games, winter games, and Paralympic Games. Each type of games is held every four years, with the winter and summer games held two years apart from each other. In this entry, we'll look at the history of the Olympic Games and the traditional symbols of the Games. The three values of Olympism are excellence, friendship and respect. They constitute the foundation on which the Olympic Movement builds its activities to promote sport, culture and education with a view to building a better world. Paralympic athletes compete in six different disability groups—amputee, cerebral palsy, visual impairment, spinal cord injuries, intellectual disability, and “les autres” (athletes whose disability does not fit into one of the other categories, including dwarfism). The most successful Paralympic athlete ever is Trischa Zorn. She was born blind. She won 55 medals in total – 41 gold, 9 silver and 5 bronze medals – between 1980 and 2004 and for the United States.
