Right, it's all well and good if you are about 3m away and everything is rendered behind the screen plane. The problem is that everyone wants that WHOA feeling they get from the thing approaching your face. Oddly enough, I think it's the discomfort that makes people really "notice" the 3d at that point. If the 3d is done well, it shouldn't really be obvious. It should just be like looking out a window.
