FletchI'd love to see higher res version of this.
DeanoC'mon NASA, 1080p, full screen!
spoco2When someone mentioned this at JPL yesterday I thought 'man, I'd love to see that video'... and here it is![](https://videosift.com/vs5/emoticon/smile.gif)

A perfect landing using radically new technology, and you are complaining about the resolution!? Jeez, no pleasing some people...
dagComment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)
720p full-color 10fps is coming from the mast cam soon. That's the duck's nuts of Mars video.>> ^A10anis:

NASA/Space/Mars program is intensely connected to public opinion. Better images, higher resolution etc.... more support more money. NASA should drop some scientific equipment and get some higher resolution images (that sir is what we call looking at the long-term game). Why do you think they release these images?

From Mechwarrior to the movie Aliens, the idea of a dropship is old hat. Hardly "radical".

Be quiet, your ignorance in citing a film, as opposed to the reality of such an achievement, is insulting to the genius of these men and woman.

Oh, ok, lets drop the science to allow higher resolution. Stfu you idiot.
DreadI am fascinated and quite proud of humanity for this feat. It is no small accomplishment and the NASA engineers should be congratulated on their planning and execution of a near flawless automated landing.
However all that being said this video is not very exciting nor captivating, the majority of it is simply a brownish blur of an image.
An overlay of what is taking place and maybe even some highlights would help this video have more general impact.

per frame altitudes and such I am sure will follow

I really hope you don't believe anyone in that video actually designed or built any of that, that's not their job.
Also, the idea was made by the SciFi writer far before the Oompa Loompas of Science got working on it.

1080p? Pffft, why stop there, let's get a IMAX 3D camera on board

Oh, ok, come out from beneath the bridge and show us who you really are... OMG! It's Mr obvious troll! And I just fed him! NOOOOOOO!
saber2xThere was a initial plan to have 3d cameras by James Cameron, but that was stopped due to a lack of time to test the cameras. http://www.space.com/11241-nasa-mars-rover-3d-camera-james-cameron.html

GutspillerSorry, I don't watch videos lower than 360 res. Let me know when the human race can send decent video back, until then, I don't care what planet you land on.
deathcowfirst HD images from this released today

At least there are still some 3D images coming our way from NASA!
rebuilderHere's some info on the resolution issue:
http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/08/08/Curiosity-interview-with-Malin-Space-Science-Systems-Mike-Ravine
tl;dr: the cameras on board Curiosity have 2 megapixel sensors, because NASA has a very conservative design philosophy and locked down the tech in 2004. They chose what they were most confident would work.
