Natural selection favors "believers" because:
1) Religion takes care of fear of death with promise of afterlife, allowing them to fight harder
2) Religion gives divine justification for the inhumane acts, facilitating brutality against outsiders

We can easy see elements of these during conventional wars, as well as in politics. E.g. Republican vs Democrat fights going on now.
