Charming Vintage Footage of San Francisco (1955)

Via: “San Francisco. Within its 45 square miles is contained one of the most colorful and romantic cities in the world.”

This short film from 1955 was made by the amateur filmmaker and inventor Tullio Pellegrini, and was uploaded from the Prelinger Archives Collection.

Highlights of the video include a nod to the Civic Center area, which the narrator refers to as the “very heart of the city: the well-planned city center.” I wonder what Pellegrini would have to say about that area today.

Moving to Fisherman’s Wharf, he remarks: “reminiscent of a Mediterranean scene, the wharf captures a bit of sunny Italy.” Oh, how things have changed in the tourist laden neighborhood.

The documentary also captures some awesome clips of Playland, the old amusement park that once was on Ocean Beach.

Watch the video for yourself to marvel at how much and how little has changed in the past 50 years — and be sure to stick around for the end, when the narrator takes his car for a ride down Lombard.

PS: How cool would it be if we still had the Cliff House Sky Tram?
