The most reasonable explanation is that the cat has been front-declawed, but not rear-declawed and knows it, so the most damage it gets is from its hind legs.

in Soviet Russia cats fight upside-down. It was actually intentionally bred into them with a plan to eventually paradrop them in the US to freak everybody out and lose the cold war.
