CGR's On This Day in Gaming - NES Tests in NYC, October 18.

"On October 18, 1985 the NES test-marketed in New York City before being released nation-wide the following year. This pivotal event would revive the video game industry in America after its notorious crash only years earlier, but it would also mark a major transition for the international industry, of which the Japanese would go on to dominate. A different culture bred different gameplay, games like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda exploiting constructive emotions -- running, jumping, exploring -- rather than the Cold-War rooted destruction of the space shooter. The NES also established a structure of integrity, lock-out chips, the 'Official Seal of Quality', and an accurate representation of a game's graphics on its box art doing everything to win back consumer confidence."
