Most of it is pattern memorization though, old shooters despite having far less bullets can be just as difficult.

Oh man, I have a hard enough time playing plain jane dodonpachi. That is just ridiculous.

This is the first game of its type where I noticed the core of the ship you are flying (and that being the important part) I have seen other games where bullets pass through the outer lines of your ship and I always found that very confusing.
