there are maybe.. 3? movies i can think of that have utterly destroyed me and made me cry almost uncontrollably, and this was one.

I found the film's constant litany of misfortune to be cynical, manipulative and cold. And on top of that we're expected to believe that someone who sings like Bjork was cast as Maria in a production of The Sound of Music.
