Bill Moyers Essay: The High Price of ‘Free' Speech

Bill opens this week’s show by explaining how last week’s Supreme Court decision not to reconsider Citizens United exposes the hoax that Citizens United was ever about “free” speech. In reality, Bill says, it’s about carpet bombing elections “with all the tonnage your rich paymasters want to buy.” -vimeo

Government created the "super Pac". The only reason the Republicans are getting super pac money is because the democrats are screwing the county badly.

The pendulum will swing back some day after the Republicans gain control and start screwing up.

So Bill quit bellyaching. Your team will be back on top some day.

I fail to understand why folks like you continue to take an active part in dis-empowering yourself in the name of what you've been told is "freedom". Freedom to subject yourself to debt slavery while decisions are made by those you are indebted to is not freedom.

This isn't a game. These aren't teams. This is money taking away OUR democracy. Until you can understand that and contribute to the solution perhaps you should concentrate on watching sports and drinking beer.

All I was implying is that if the table was turned Bill Moyers would not have said a peep.

He was indicating that it was so unfair that Rommey was in much better financial shape than OBAMA due to super PACS. Everyone can see why this is occurring because OBAMA and the democrats have done such a terrible job.

I do agree that all PAC $ should be stopped. All companies, should not be allow to contribute no more that an individual should. I thinks that around $2500. to any person running for office.

I do understand you point. Both parties are as crooked as the day is long.

America needs a new national holiday called Shoot a crooked politician day.
After a few of these holidays this mess would straighten right up.

Media corporations, such as those employing Bill Moyers and journalists like him, have
always had an exception to limitations on speech during political campaigns. In the interest of full disclosure he should admit that he's just arguing for his own privilege. What he fails to mention is that after Citizen's United, as before, for-profit corporations don't give much to political candidates.

The problem with the first amendment is that it's just so difficult for those with influence to accept that it should mean what it says.

Firstly, I am fully aghast at this over-moneyed craziness in your country. Secondly, the thing that I am most amazed by is that bobknight33 can watch that whole video and reduce it to the incredibly vapid rant he spewed underneath the video. Citizens United, coupled with the flaunting of middle-class ignorance as displayed by bobknight33, is what will destroy your country. I can only hope you don't take down the rest of us, though I suspect you will.

An empire in decline, on an accelerating trajectory.

All the empire in decline talk seems a bit short sighted to me. How long have women had the right to vote? How long have blacks had equal rights? The last 100 years has seen an enormous upward trajectory to go with the downward stuff that's happening in recent memory. Things are still 'up' from the days of McCarthy and a commie behind every Bush.

What does female suffrage have to do with American decline? America didn't 'invent' female suffrage. It started in New Zealand and then Australia. Similarly, universal suffrage regardless of race was introduced in other democracies before America.

The 'empire in decline' talk is around American leadership in economic, societal and economic terms. Post-war it is arguable that America led in all these areas. The same cannot be seriously argued now, where other countries and regions are demonstrably superior.
