i'm an atheist and see it as 99.999999 percent likely that some higher god/creator doesnt exist.
but a god refusing to prove that he exists, and then some proof coming about that he does resulting in faith being turned into universal knowledge of his existence.. it wouldnt mean he doesnt exist, i mean where is it said that without faith god is nothing?...

johnald128says...

yeah, but i thought this bit was supposed to be logical, it wouldnt have been that hard...
i like the little fish dudes face. and stephen fry was perfect for the narrator

Wow - Everybody - there is no such thing as true logic in any of the Douglass Adams works. At one point in his story, the protagonist learns to fly. The trick is simple as explained by the book: When you're falling, you just need to forget to hit the ground.
So johnald is wrong - everything in this video is simply made up for a good humoring story.

Actually the logic works quite well. It goes something like this:
1. God would never allow proof of his existence to exist.
2. Babelfish is proof of God's existence.
3. If God existed, he would never allow the Babelfish to exist.
4. The Babelfish exists.
5. God must not exist.

BicycleRepairMansays...

The babel fish "logic" is a play on the religious "logic", ie: circle-arguing nonsense religious people come up with to avoid showing actual evidence, "God works in mysterious ways" "god doesnt need or want to prove he exists" etc. Adams simply mocks their puffs of logic, and creates a fake "proof" of Gods non-existence.

"Man then conveniences himself that black is white and white is black and is then trampled to death by a heard of zebras."

I loved the whole HHGTTG series so much, I think I need to read them again.

BicycleRepairMan i think you hit the nail on the head.

i think i'd just have preferred it if it was funny, and logical, but also mocked religion. it's cool if he purposefully made it illogical. i dont suppose he was expecting it to be made into a hollywood movie anyways

Faith that God exists without proof is the defining characteristic of true belief.

With proof, no faith is necessary,... so believing in the existence of God would be like believing in the existence of computers, or trees... no faith required, the proof is right there. A God who required faith without proof then could not exist in the presence of proof.
