Barack Obama's War: Afghanistan's Failing Army

From guardian.co.uk:
"As Barack Obama announces more US troops to train the Afghanistan army, John D McHugh reports on how US soldiers view their Afghan counterparts as ill-disciplined, badly led and with a crippling taste for hashish "

This is a pretty negative look at the training of the ANA. Though there is still much work to be done, the ANA has made some amazing advances, including a Canadian-trained unit recently repelling a Taliban attack without foreign assistance (see:http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/afghan_cda_village_attack).

Yes they are backward and many of them use drugs, but you can't expect a country to go from having no army to having a competent, professional military in such a short time. Just imagine if we took a handful of civilians from an average North American city, handed them rifles and some gear and told them to win a war against an experienced and well equipped enemy. I guarantee you that the average yuppie would be a lot less useful than the these fledgling Afghani soldiers.

in my experience the ana did fairly well and like skeeve said have made advances. the anp (afghan national police), however, were a bunch of shitheads who didnt have a fucking clue
