The last crash was kind of weird, the car seemed to have slowed right down, yet when it hit the car in front it caused the car it hit to go flying.

Agreed. I would stand to the side of the track near the apex of the jump, not where the cars are landing and bouncing around. Or the worst lunatics, standing around a tough corner. They're just begging to be mown down.
