Looking at the comments so far it seems the americans are living up to how they are perceived. People who cant take a joke about them selves. I know you might not know what a Logie is, but ligten up people. It's just a joke!

So... how are Americans perceived, exactly? If the answer is that Americans don't like having a raving lunatic come into our workplace and start telling us what a bunch of fuckwits we are, then you're probably right.

Just a joke? I have a more cynical outlook. It's a joke for his viewers - Australians, meant to get him ratings. I doubt there was much humor in it for the people in the restaurant that night.

yeesh..

I don't think it's really right to take offense to a chain of restaurants like that.

Honestly, The "Bloomin' Onion" is just a play on words, the onion has been chopped and deep-fried to look as if it's "Blooming" for gods sake.

There's an Australian restaurant.. There's also Italian, Greek, Chinese, Mexican, The only difference being that the Aussie one is just using a theme..
Last time I checked, it didn't actually claim to have authentic Australian food.

It's not a joke when you yell at a woman who's just trying to earn her pay. It's not just a joke when you start yelling obscenities in a family restaurant.
What a fucking prick.

I agree completely, the woman there is just a freaking waitress. My sister works as a waitress, and I can tell you that something like this is not only going to get her in a bad mood, but now everybody is probably going to tip LESS because they've been offended in the restaurant.

Honestly, If that's what passes for T.v. in Australia, going to another country and insulting them, why the FUCK can't you buy violent video games?

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)

This is just a comedy bit, and I'm sure the server was made happy after the filming stopped - but if you want to get slightly more serious about it ...

The OutBack represents the tawdry commercialisation of another culture by by a US corporation. Using a nation and its people as a gimmick to sell overpriced junk food that bears no actual relation to the country its attempting to imitate is lame -- and if I may be a prick for a moment -- oh so American.

spoco2says...

I'm not a fan of the Chaser when they do things like this, I mean, they are making life hard for people who are otherwise just trying to do their jobs.

Plus it is a little lazy, I mean there are plenty, plenty of better ways to make fun of the Outback Steakhouses.

Just show one of their ads... they're terrible enough.

But yeah, at least themed restaurants of other countries at least TRY to be a tiny bit authentic.

HOLY CRAP! I was just looking to see what's on their menu (as I can't remember it all from last time I was in the States)... They are now in Australia! I can't believe that a fake Australia restaurant created in America is now IN the country it's pretending to be.

Stunning.

Now, looking at their menu.

No damper (real Australian bush bread)
Hmmm, he goes off about beetroot not being on the burgers and he's right, actually, the menu is different in the Australia Outback steakhouse menu vs the America one... let's see:

US burger: A burger topped with Bloomin’ Onion® petals, American cheese, lettuce, tomato and our famous Bloom sauce.
AUS burger: A ridgy didge works burger, served with bacon, egg, cheese, beetroot, lettuce, tomato, grilled onion & Outback´s special BBQ sauce

So, in the US they get... um... an American burger, and in Australia they get an Australian burger.

WHAT IS THE POINT? If you're going to have a friggen themed restaurant, bloody well let people ACTUALLY EAT THE FOOD! I mean, why go to a place like that if you're just going to eat a US burger anyway? GEEZE... It's the standard US thing of 'oooh, better just give them what they're used to, don't want to shock them'.

It happens with books, movies, music, food, everything.

And I think it grossly undersells the actual people of the States. I'm sure the majority of you Americans would actually LIKE to try a real Australian burger... wouldn't you? Rather than just having yet another US burger with American cheese and everything you expect?

phelixiansays...

Sure I hate the elements of our society he points out and criticizes, but I also hate loud douche-bags that think they're funny screaming at and putting people down in public places. Was there even a good joke in their? The boomerang on the white house thing? Fuck off.

Anyone that yells at me while I'm eating food I just paid for with my hard earned money sucks donkey cock.

videosiftbannedmesays...

I've always wondered myself, do they have "American" restaurants in China and other countries? I'm not talking McDonalds, et al., I mean do they have restaurants where they serve traditionally American foods like Meatloaf, Turkey with stuffing, macaroni and chese, etc.? And are Americans running them? Seems to me that would be the reverse, right?

Odds are you are completely correct. The reasoning for most people I know to go to outback is that they have great ribs, and it is just treated like any other restaurant. It would be nice if there we select nights where is wasn't played up into such a sham.

Watch the chaser more often - this guys shtick is to go and make an ass of himself and offend everyone including the viewer. Same general idea as Jackass or any other comedian out there who is out to get a reaction, good or bad. It's not exactly top-class entertainment but its still a joke.

The skit is also somewhat ironic (and therefore funny) because there isn't a hell of a lot to rant about when it comes to Aussie culture, being such a new, small, multi-cultural civilization.

I hear that "he/she is just trying to do his/her job to earn his/her pay, HAVE SOME RESPECT" crap way too often to "protect" people from the most innocent and playful things, and it's custom-designed to make people look like monsters.

Come on man, what a shitty comment. Have a go at him for swearing in a family restaurant, fine, that's the only bad thing he did. She's not made of glass ffs.

I mean he didn't really shout at her and she was laughing and/or playing along at first, she could see a joke coming. Let's face it, if you've ever worked at a restaurant, you'd be dining on that story for years to come in the boring hours when you're stood near the bar waiting for customers to come in trying to chat up the new young bartender, or he trying to chat you up.

"Hey remember that weirdo who came in here and thought it was australia? I served him! Omg i nearly died, it was crazy, i knew something was happening from the start but i didn't realise he'd be such a wacko!"

Come on, really, do we have to make a suffragette out of her?

And you know what crap I hear 'way too often'? "Hey, its just a joke - lighten up." Uh uh. Too many so-called 'comedians' think that just because they call it a joke it gives them a free pass to be a complete jackass. They go places and say stuff that would get them arrested or get the feces beat out of them, and then try to pass it off by saying "Hey - it's just a joke, lighten up!" What a bunch of total cowards.

Tell you what. How about the waitresses' boyfriend flies over to Oz and follows these jerk-off's mothers around for a few hours, yells obsceneties at them, insults them, chases off thier friends, and that kind of crap with a film crew. Hey - he's just doing it to make fun of that corporate Aussie comedy show whose only 'job' is to make money off the misery of others. How are they any different than that 'evil' Outback Restaurant? Besides, it's just a joke! Lighten up!

"Just a joke" is a cheap, coward's escape hatch that lame jerks try to pull when they deserve to get punched in the teeth.

Oh, my bad. I forgot that it's perfectly acceptable in modern society to yell at people that have done nothing wrong.
Just because she laughs does NOT mean she finds it funny. It means she's trying to do her job. That is, she was trying before some asshole came in and started yelling at her for nothing that was her fault.

enemycombatantsays...

For the love of God, it is just a naming theme. Nobody thinks Outback is trying to represent traditional Australian culture.

What is next for this prick, walking into Olive Garden and demanding a seat next to the "garden"? Maybe he'll storm into a McDonalds in Australia and shout about how fat fast food has made the Americans.

Dignant_Pinksays...

If I want eggrolls and lo mein, I say "let's get some chinese." If I want pasta, I say "let's get some italian." If I want a burrito and salsa, I say "let's get some mexican." However, if I want a bloomin onion and some ribs, I say "let's get some Outback." I do not say "let's get some australian." I understand that what they have there is probably very unlike what they actually serve in australia. (come to think of it, thats probably the same with all the foods i just mentioned, but i digress)

Outback is a steakhouse. I go there to eat, not for the "ooh, we're in exotic australia" atmosphere. I think it's pretty much understood that it's just a themed restaurant.

Winstonfield_Pennypackersays...

People have to understand that American's co-opt all things culinary and turn them into their own thing. If you are in the United States...
1. Mexican restaurants do not serve 'authentic' Mexican cuisine.
2. Chinese restaurants do not serve 'authentic' Chinese cuisine.
3. Italian restaurants do not serve 'authentic' Italian cuisine.

Basically almost NO ethnic restaurants serve authentic ethnic cuisine. There are some exceptions, but they are few and far between and they are NOT (definitely) NOT a 'chain'.

So for these jerk-faces who are pretending to be funny to get all testy because Outback STEAKHOUSE (steakhouse DUH!) doesn't serve authentic cuisine from Australia's outback is beyond moronic. It isn't funny. It isn't even close to being funny. It's a pathetic attempt at humor that fails miserably on all levels.

If they'd actually tried some HUMOR instead of just being a bunch of jackholes maybe they'd have a purpose. They didn't. Humor isn't just tossing an epileptic, autistic, turret's syndrome fit in public over something pathetically mundane like the non-issue of an American restaurant (gasp!) serving American food!

blablablasays...

This guys is a douche. Unfortunately thanks to socialism, white trash like him can travel. First off, 2 minutes worth of research would have shown that the restaurant's theme is outback Australia, not the cuisine. It never said Authentic Australian food. "Despite its 'theme', Outback Steakhouse serves American cuisine, with Creole influences". The theme refers to a relaxed and friendly environment (aka the outback) not the cities which are full of wankers. Something he is clearly not akin too. Otherwise they would have had served meat pies, sh-t beer (VB)and had a shoes optional policy.

As an Aussie I can say we are not all like that and I actually really enjoyed eating at the outback 'steakhouse' in the states. The irony is that the Outback also opened up in Sydney and won the 2008 Award for excellence: Restaurant and Catering, for the state.
