Are you a genius? - Solve this coin puzzle

A coin puzzle with a difference. You get to see the puzzle AND the solution, but it's still hard to solve!

coupland -- you do, apparently

I think what's interesting about this puzzle is how easy it is for a computer. If you disallow large spaces between coins and account for symmetry, there are only 10 arrangements of coins, and any arrangement can be obtained from any other in a maximum of 4 moves, so a basic search gets the result easily. I guess abstract group theory problems is not something we evolved to do well

It doesn't seem that difficult to me. Yeah, it took me 2 tries to get it, but I was looking for a trick the first time. Puzzles like the Towers of Hanoi are a lot more difficult, and software engineers often have to solve some pretty complex ones when they are interviewing for jobs. This one is very simple by comparison.

That's lame. I paused the video and tried before he showed the solution. Following his rules, I was able to get it after a couple of tries, but I did it different than he did. I solved it in 3 moves where he takes 5 moves.
